This body of work is concerned with the physical ramifications of invasive species in the Pacific Northwest. Competition over others, over land, over architecture are all points that humanity has taken on as an intrinsic trait. By studying 'basic' species who bypass this characteristic and have made such a trait their main evolutionary point, I reflect upon my own needs to 'fight for my place'.

Is natural compulsion, if it exists within my species (and particular body) a plausible excuse for stepping on others to better my chances of survival (or enhance my career, my social sphere, etc)?

As a non-hunter, artist Allyce Wood focuses not on the prospects of food or warmth-giving pelts,
but the beauty and strangeness of each natural element when removed from the carcass. Subjects such as meat preparation, the skinning of kills, and the basic handling of the dead are recreated by watercolor painted paper sculptures, cut paper tangles, and prints. Tangles of blood vessels stand alone like tumbleweeds, gold weavings hang like drying fruit: emblems of the richness of life left to shrivel. The material selected reflects upon the fragility of life: the temporality of construction is a reminder of the tenuous existence of those being depicted. The artificial remains are displayed upon black
woodworks: tripods such as those over camping fires or meat-drying racks further explaining the
consciousness of the humans involved in the original actions.

(Boxes cost $130, or if you're an avid collector you can subscribe for a year and get all six for $700.)

By collaborating with Seattle artists and writers, LxWxH provides an avenue to bring people together and collect art in an affordable and approachable way.

these drawings are a basic evaluation and imagining of one plausible ‘bonus cause’ of the extinction of north american megafauna. like the stories of native people’s hunting method of stampeding bison off of cliffs, ice age humans forced species such as the short-faced bear or irish elk off of the mainland onto ice flows and small islands. Then, they would wait for starvation to take over the herd, or butcher them. (fish in a barrel, these huge meal-sources had no place to run.)

(interesting fact- mammals weighing over 100 pounds are classified as megafauna; we’ve been a part of this classification for over 13,000 years.)

i considered tthat theory in relation to the isolation preserve tactics currently being used by environmentalists. the most precise counter example is the rothschild giraffes who have been literally transported by ship to inhabit a nigerian island for safekeeping. (see the article here.)

in both situations, humans are the driving force for the species collection and relocation, and are responsible for the ecosystem left behind.

Both pieces, Habitancy at Mad Homes and this, describe the temporality of residing/existing in one space. In the previous work, layers of cross-room string and intricate, full color wall drawing allow the fully realized silhouettes of dogs and people to vibrate in the space. The material tension is obvious, as is the fate of the house, allowing the viewer to consider just how long the characters will be allowed to 'stay'. Here, the gallery allows for an environment of artist selected symbols and materials to house the same characters. This abstracted scenario enables the figures to begin their fateful unravel.

this exhibit was part of a project conceived by A12 for NABA entitled "Star Museum". for more information about their current work- please visit www.a12-star.blogspot.com

the project miniturized versions of many artists' work were set into beautiful mirrored balls which were then arranged into a cart. this gallery on wheels was displayed throughout campus. each artwork had a tag with the info/artist/dimensions/origin/ and distance from italy of the artist stamped on them. (seattle is 5067 miles away from italy, approximately.)

messersmith describes the concept as a method in which to bring stars "closer" then their physical distance from the university in rome; stars in this case are the artists involved as well as deceased artists that inspired the project.

Mad Arts, Mad Homes

Prior to salvage and/or relocation, a group of neighboring North Capitol Hill homes will be used by MadArt to create unique, site-specific installations. The Mad Homes artists will use exterior and interior spaces as their creative canvases for this three-week show. Unrestrained by conventional limitations, the artists will create dynamic art installations while working in a temporary space.

We encourage you either come by foot, bicycle, or bus. Parking is almost always occupied by the local residents. Here are some suggestions for public transportation:

'first glimpse' will be unveiled at the SAM Gallery this wednesday, the 12th of may, as part of the group show 'Introductions'.


mulitmedia installation involving silkscreen, cut paper, and wood

‘First Glimpse’ depicts a story told to the artist by her father: In 1972 he visited his father, who was working on the Wynoochee dam. On a solitary hike, he looked up spontaneously and met the gaze of a young cougar. “I was the first person he had ever seen- he didn’t know what to do with me.”

The strangeness of realizing that your first encounter with a plausibly dangerous animal while simultaneously realizing it is the predators first encounter with a human is one that is interesting, and in this modern world, fantastical. It is for these reasons that Wood chose to recreate the scene using methods of her own storytelling: life-sized prints and cut paper.

Performance Video Is Soon To Come

this show, entitled 'Re-Admittance to Nature' showcased the first ever collaboration between myself and e.dugh (cornish alum 2010). in it were several works including separate responses to our interpretations of what must be done and how we already assimilate into the wilderness as well as the central piece, 'Re-Admittance to Nature.

this piece was a site specific installation in which an animation (made by e. dughi) was projected through the 12' long window onto the alaskan-way viaduct, through my own hand cut paper elements. the opening included the performative installation of the paper; the additive covering acted as a screen to allow for more and more of the animation to be visible inside.

Legacies in Print brings together print work from Oaxaca, Mexico and Cornish's Mary Alice Cooley Print Collection*. The exhibition features work by established Oaxaqueno printmakers Shinzaburo Takeda, Sergio Hernandez, Enrique Flores, Ferando Olivera, Israel Nazario, Lorena Guerra, and Fulgencio Lazo; and Cooley Collection artists Jeffry Mitchell, Ben Beres (AR '00), Dawn Cerny (AR '01), Joey Katzer (AR '00), Rickie Wolfe (AR '00), Junko Yamamoto (AR '99), and others. Curated by Seattle curator Peggy Weiss for the Seattle Oaxaca Connection organization, this combined exhibition was created in an effort to strengthen the international creative alliance between Seattle and Oaxaca, and sets the stage for future exchanges between U.S. and Mexican artists.

ACT Theatre is located on Kreielsheimer Place 700 Union St Seattle WA 98101(the windows are visible from 7th Ave between Pike and Union and inside the theater)

this piece is composed of many elements; the acrylic-painted black and white photocopies (suspended by monofilament) as well as the color photocopies (that line the window sill) began as ink drawings. the large, chain-motif backdrop is vinyl. the widow stickers are colorfast ink on vinyl. the window is 10 feet high, 12 feet wide, and 18 inches deep. inside, the ‘birds’ extend outwards and to the ceiling another four feet.

These images document my work shown for Slated for Revision, a group sculpture show at Cornish College of the Arts' Main Gallery. The work are two variations of one idea: because humans are equipt with only race-derived "warmth devices" (i.e. manmade clothes) we can never bond fully with our biological ancestors. I have found awe and pleasure in studying of such materials (i.e. fur) and built these totem or memorial or beds as markation.

The original variation of this has been shown in Glasgow, as a part of the 30Days 30Artworks project by Alistair Gow and Helene Zakariassen Skulstad.

this piece establishes a shift in my work; while still considering animals and their place in a perceptibly 'human world', i have adjusted the scope to that of a personal scale. i began with a question such as "what is the difference that initially set our race apart from others?", and experimented in thinking about humanity's primitive perspectives of animals.anatomical differences where an instant conclusion.

as a path of deer walk through high grass for the first time, the effects they make are almost unperceivable. as they continue to habit the same route, the path they build becomes more and more noticeable. they wear the grass through to hard earth.

a populations resurgence

in 2007, my grandparents and i went to visit the elk in yakima. i have gone on many family trips over to eastern washington, but never before with just my grandparents or to see this herd. it was an unbelievable trip. the sparkle of the frost and the brilliance of the blue sky, the rocky brown of basalt and shrub-grass, and the steady walking of more and more elk coming out of the valley into the plain towards us is something not to be forgotten.

the story goes that the animals (as well as many others that depended on them as a food source) had been irradicated by hunting in the early 1900's and then recreated semi-recently from canadian and midwestern breeding. now they are many. many, and living in the largest agricultural area of washington. they, of course, were eating those crops and multiplying, causing conflict between the animal rights groups and the farmers. solutions were few, and all, to some degree, implied removing the species: exterminating or removing those who were literally made to be there. luckily, an experimental feeding program was devised so as to save crops.

to see 'wild animals' eating hay from the back of a truck during designated 'meal times' is rather tragic, but their potential demise was even more so.

upon hearing this story and documenting my experiences there, i wanted to create a work that not only highlighted their beauty as living things, but their life's temperance. for this i devised the following string installation: a mimic of their forms that, with one simple snip, could unravel into nothing.

returning home, back to school, i made this retrospective show. in it are bits of preexisting work and ideas from my semester abroad at glasgow school of art. it gave opportunity to show photography by Diana Jørgensen and print three's print exchange. such good work!
